Volunteer Job Description for Clean Ocean Action: 

BEACH SWEEPS VOLUNTEER PARTICIPANT

Job Title:

  • Volunteer participant in Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweeps.

Supervisor:

  • Beach Captain at local Beach Sweeps Site, who represent Clean Ocean Action.

Goal:

  • Participate in a beach cleanup as part of statewide effort to stop ocean pollution. 
  • The information you collect about debris at your local site will help spread the message about the dangers of litter in the marine environment. As of 2022, Beach Sweeps volunteers have removed 8,315,027 pieces of debris, including brake shoes, a boomerang, tanning goggles and a fully decorated Christmas tree!

Major Responsibilities:

  • Pick-up and separate trash
  • Accurately write/record items on data card (provided by Clean Ocean Action)
  • Follow any other instructions given by Beach Captain
  • Time Commitments: 
    2 Saturdays each year (in late April and late October)
    9am-12:30pm

Qualifications:

  • Physical ability to walk the beach; some ability needed to lift medium size bags of trash
  • Enthusiasm for the environment
  • Ability to clearly and accurately record items collected on data card

Training & Preparations:

  • All ages welcome.  Volunteers should bring/wear garden or latex gloves, dress for the weather, wear closed, hard-soled shoes, and attend rain or shine.  Specific guidelines and instructions will be provided by the Beach Captain at the site you attend.

Work Location:

  • Local ocean, lake, river, or stream shore at 72 locations up and down the Jersey Shore.
