Clean Ocean Action

Volunteer for a Clean Ocean

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Clean Ocean Action! Without volunteers, Clean Ocean Action’s information would not reach thousands of people who enjoy our unique coast and the voices of the ocean and citizens would not be heard by those who make decisions critical to our coast’s future.

Throughout the year, Clean Ocean Action offers several volunteer opportunities to help further our mission. All of New Jersey’s fabulous SEAsons bring new and exciting opportunities to get involved. Whether you’re engaging with people at a COA info-table at a summer festival or helping circulate a timely petition, volunteer opportunities are always presenting themselves!

If you are interested in joining our green, lean, ocean-pollution fighting team, please complete the volunteer form that is of most interest to you (see descriptions below): Education/Advocacy, Community Science, Fundraising/Events, Office/Administration.

The separation of forms is meant for us to get you plugged-in where you are most interested, passionate, and confident!

Upon completion of the form, a COA staff member will follow up with you regarding details of our next Volunteer Training date(s)!

Thank you for your support and enthusiasm for Clean Ocean Action’s mission. We look forward to fighting ocean pollution, together!

Education and Advocacy – Volunteer Form

Do you love the ocean? Do you like talking to and educating people? Like to take action?

Clean Ocean Action applies research, public education and citizen action to improve the quality of the waters off the New Jersey/New York coast. Our belief is that people will take action to protect what they love and understand. Together, we keep our ocean clean.

To help achieve this, Clean Ocean Action invites volunteers to help educate and engage citizens on stopping sources of pollution in this region, and ways to take action. From presentations to interactive activities, Education and Advocacy Volunteers will work closely with COA's Education Coordinator and Advocacy Campaign Manager, to educate and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds! Tasks include speaking with or presenting to people, setting up displays to engage with people, educating children, making calls, promoting petitions or opportunities for action, sharing social media posts and information, and writing letters to editors or elected officials!

Community Science - Volunteer Form

Community science is collaborative scientific work conducted by members of the general public, professionals and amateurs alike, under the direction of professional scientists or scientific institutions. Community science is essential to Clean Ocean Action's mission to improve water quality off the NY/NJ coast. Clean Ocean Action's community science opportunities include water quality monitoring and litter removal and documentation projects. Community science may include bending, lifting (up to 25 pounds), reaching, or navigating rough terrain, possibly in adverse weather conditions.

Fundraising and Events - Volunteer Form

Do you enjoy meeting members of the community who share your passion for the ocean? Do you love attending fairs and festivals dedicated to ocean protection? Fundraising and events are critical to COA's mission of protecting the ocean off NJ and NY. Volunteers will work to ensure events are fun and fabulous. Tasks are various and could include committee or independent work on decorations, auctions, promotions, marketing, networking, or sales. Tasks could also include set-up and break-down at events.

General Office Work - Volunteer Form

Are you a details person? Do you like organizing? Research? Spreadsheets? The daily office operations and support is essential to the success of COA. Some of the daily tasks include making copies, filing, preparing mail, and other general office work. We also assist with program and fundraising events, by collecting and organizing needed materials and supplies. Additionally, this department ensures comfortable and professional office and meeting areas which may involve moving bins, furniture, and/or electronics.
