In 2007, 4,937 volunteers collected over 302,000 items from 116 locations during the combined Spring and Fall Beach Sweeps.  Seventy-three percent of the debris collected and catalogued by volunteers was made of plastic.  The top 5 items collected in 2007 were: 38,019 cigarette filters; 33,724 plastic caps/lids; 30,221 plastic food/candy wrappers/bags; 23,159 plastic pieces; and 21,787 plastic straws/stirrers.  Some of the “Roster of the Ridiculous” items were three toilet seats, television, 8-track tape, car bumper, and an EZPass tag.
