Clean Ocean Action

Clean Ocean Advocate, August 2009

June’s creature was the Thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus).  This typically harmless, open-ocean shark can reach up to almost 25 feet in length including its tail. When it is born, the shark is 4-5 feet long and weighs about 12 pounds. In the eastern North Atlantic, the shark lives from Newfoundland to the Caribbean Sea and is highly migratory.  Judge Marlin White thanks all who submitted guesses and congratulates the contest winner Cameron Kanterman

of Brick, NJ!

August’s creature feature is a bird that is known for diving feet first to catch fish – which makes up 99% of its diet.  In addition to trees, this bird may build nests on telephone poles, street lights, and constructed platforms.  The wingspan ranges from 5 to almost 6 feet.  For a chance to win a COA T-shirt, submit your guess to Judge Hallie Butby mail, fax, email (18 Hartshorne Dr., Suite 2, Highlands, NJ 07732; 732-872-8041; science@CleanOceanAction.org) or by visiting CleanOceanAction.org. Only one entry per person please.

(Coastal Creature Feature appears every other month in the Clean Ocean Advocate.)
